Salbutamol is taken by inhalation using an aerosol, nebulized solution or powder. The drug is also available as a tablet for patients who are unable to use it via inhalation. Injection options are also available.

The drug should be used exactly as prescribed. Don’t take smaller or larger doses or for longer durations than prescribed. The medicine will help relieve the symptoms. Your doctor may require that you use this drug together with other medicines. Salbutamol should offer immediate relief to the symptoms of asthma.

The prescribed dose will depend on a patient’s medical condition. The dose is based on gender, age, medical condition, response to therapy and the use of other medications.

It is unknown if using Salbutamol while pregnant can harm your baby. Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant during treatment. It is sensible to reduce the dosage while pregnant. Salbutamol will pass into breast milk and should only be used if the benefits outweigh the risks.

Salbutamol should be used with caution by patients with severe asthma, diabetes, heart problems, overactive thyroid gland, high blood pressure, lung infections, and arrhythmias, those with low levels of potassium in the blood and those intolerant to some sugars. Consult your doctor before you start using this medication.

Don’t take a larger dose than recommended. If the previous dose does not offer relief for at least three hours, you should talk to your doctor for recommendation on additional or alternative treatment.

Don’t use Salbutamol if you are allergic to it or to its ingredients. Your doctor should also know of all the medications you are using so as to avoid interactions.

Salbutamol should not be used with the following drugs:

  • Theophylline
  • Methyldopa
  • Aminophylline
  • Beta blockers for heart conditions or blood pressure
  • Diuretics
  • Drugs used for depression
  • Digoxin
  • Steroids
  • Atomoxetine
