Description
Promethazine is a drug used to treat allergies. It treats such symptoms as itching, itchy or watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose, skin rashes and hives. The drug may also be prescribed to prevent motion sickness and to treat nausea and vomiting as well as pain after a surgery. The medicine can also be used as a sleeping aid or a sedative.
Promethazine belongs to a group of drugs known as phenothiazines. In its working, the drug changes the effects of chemicals in the brain. It works basically as an antihistamine; blocking the effects of histamine in the brain.
It is important to note that Promethazine cannot be used to treat the symptoms of pneumonia, asthma and other infections in the lower respiratory tract.

Promethazine should be used with a prescription. Do not take a larger or smaller dose than recommended. Your doctor may change your dose occasionally to achieve the best results.
Promethazine is taken before meals or at bedtime. If being treated for motion sickness, the dose is taken at least an hour before travelling. For surgery, the drug is taken a night before the planned surgery.
The frequency of taking this medicine depends on the conditions being treated. Use a dosing syringe to measure the dose. A pharmacist will provide you with the proper dose-measuring spoon or dosing syringe.
Report changes in weight and other new and worsening side effects and symptoms.

It is unknown if Promethazine can harm an unborn baby. Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant soon. It is also unknown if Promethazine can pass into breast milk. Consult your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby.

In case of uncontrollable movements or twitching of the lips, tongue, arms, legs, face or eye lids, stop using Promethazine and contact your doctor. These might be the early signs of serious side effects.
Promethazine should not be given to a child below the age of 2. The medicine can cause severe breathing problems or even death in very young kids. Always contact your doctor before using this medication.
Some of the side effects of Promethazine will impair your judgment and reactions. Avoid activities that require alertness. You should also avoid alcohol while on this drug in order to avoid serious interactions. Your doctor must also know of all the medications you are using before a prescription is given.
