Description
Praziquantel is an anti-warm medication (anthelmintic). It works by preventing the newly hatched insect larvae (worms) in the body from multiplying or growing. The drug is used to treat the infections that are caused by the Schistosoma worms. These are worms that enter the body by passing through the skin after being in contact with contaminated water. These worms are found in the Middle Eastern countries, South America, Africa, parts of Asia and the Caribbean.
Praziquantel can also be prescribed to treat infections with liver flukes; an infection caused by some type of worms found in East Asia. These worms enter the body when a person eats contaminated fish.
Praziquantel should not be used to treat parasitic infections in the eyes. The drug may be used for other purposes not mentioned in this guide.

Praziquantel should be taken exactly as directed by your doctor. Don’t take smaller or larger doses or for shorter or longer periods than directed.
Praziquantel should always be taken with a meal. Do not chew or crush the tablet before swallowing. Swallow it whole with a full glass of water. The typical dose of Praziquantel is taken 3 times a day. The dose is usually 4 – 6 hours apart.
To correct a dose, you may be required to break the tablets. Follow the instructions of your doctor keenly.
Category B
Praziquantel is not expected to cause harm to an unborn baby. However, you should let your doctor know if you are pregnant or if you plan on becoming pregnant during the course of treatment. The drug may pass into breast milk and can harm a breastfeeding baby. Don’t use this drug without talking to your doctor if you are nursing a baby. Praziquantel should not be given to kids below the age of 4.

Do not use this drug if you have an allergic reaction to praziquantel or if you have used rifampin (Rifater, Rifadin, Rifamate) within the last 4 weeks. It is also important to let your doctor know if you have heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease or a history of epilepsy or seizures.
Praziquantel should not be used by kids below the age of 4.
The drug can impair your reactions or thinking. Avoid activities that require alertness when using this medication.
