Yasmin is an oral contraceptive hormone for women which is also used as treatment for acne and PMDD (pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder). Yasmin has been proven to be 99% successful in preventing pregnancy. Only women over the age of 14 who are already menstruating should use Yasmin.

Yasmin must be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Orally swallow one pill per day, starting on the first day of your period, following the arrows on the package. Try to take at the same time each day. If you forget, take the missed pill as soon as you remember. The first 21 days are yellow pills with hormone, and the final 7 white pills are without hormone just to help you keep track. When you finish a pack of pills, start a new one the following day. The treatment will not be an effective contraceptive for the first week. If you consistently miss pills, the treatment will be less effective.

Do not take Yasmin if you have or had one or more of the following conditions: blood circulation disorders, heart attack, angina, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, liver or kidney disease, breast cancer. Do not take if you are pregnant or nursing, allergic to any of the ingredients, or suffer from migraines. Be sure to discuss your medical conditions and medications with your doctor before starting treatment.

The active ingredients in Yasmin tablets are two synthetically devised female hormones: ethinylestradiol and drospirenone which are versions of the naturally produced oestrogen and progesterone. By taking Yasmin daily, the body acts as if ovulation has already occurred preventing an egg from being released from the ovaries. In addition, Yasmin increases the the thickness of the cervical and uterine mucus which makes it more difficult for sperm to pass into the womb to reach an egg. Finally, the hormone makes the womb lining less conducive to implantation of a fertilized egg. Yasmin generally results in lighter, less painful, and more regular cycles.

The most common reported side effects include: breast pain or tenderness, headaches, heavy non-menstrual vaginal bleeding, irregular menstrual periods, nausea, normal menstrual bleeding occurring earlier and/or longer. Less common side effects include vomiting and fatigue. Talk to your doctor in case of any severe side effects.
