To ensure the safe use of bimatoprost, let your doctor know of your history with any of these conditions:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Uveitis (an eye condition)
  • Infection or swelling of the eye
  • Medical conditions
  • Medicines you use

Use bimatoprost as prescribed. Don’t take smaller or larger doses than recommended or for longer periods than directed. Unless advised otherwise by the doctor, use the medicine in the evening. Always remove your contact lenses first. The medicine may contain preservatives that may discolor contact lenses. Don’t wear the contact lenses for at least 15 minutes after using bimatoprost.

To prevent infections, wash your hands before and after handling the dropper. Tilt your head back and pull the lower eyelid down to form a pocket. Look away before squeezing the dropper. Close the eye for about 3 minutes with your head tilted. Don’t squint or blink. Press a finger to the inside corner of your eye for a minute to keep the medicine from draining out through the tear duct.

Never use more drops than directed by the doctor. If you are required to use more drops at one go, wait at least 5 minutes between drops. In case you use other eye drops, wait 10 minutes before or after using bimatoprost.

Don’t touch the tip of the eye dropper to the eye as this may cause infections. Discard the medicine if the liquid changes color or has particles.

It is unknown if bimatoprost can cause harm to an unborn baby. Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant soon. It is unknown if the drug can be passed into breast milk and whether it can cause harm to a breastfeeding baby.

Refrigerate the medicine but don’t freeze. You may also store at room temperature and away from heat and moisture.

Serious

  • Swelling, redness, pain or itching in or around the eye
  • Vision changes
  • Increased light sensitivity

Use bimatoprost exactly as prescribed. You should also follow the instructions on the label and inform your doctor of all your allergies, medical conditions and the medications you may be taking. Don’t use this drug if you are allergic to bimatoprost.

Bimatoprost should not be used by patients below the age of 16.

In case of an eye injury during treatment, inform your doctor right away. Your doctor should also be contacted if you have new infections, adverse side effects or if you need eye surgery.

Bimatoprost has an interaction with 2 drugs (bimatoprost topical, Latisse, Xalatan and latanoprost ophthalmic) and 3 disease interactions (renal/liver disease, Uveitis and macular edema)
